What a Notary Public Does

What a Notary Public Does

A notary public is a public officer commissioned by the state to serve as an impartial witness when important papers are signed. During your appointment, the notary will:
● Check your photo ID to confirm you are the person named on the document
● Make sure you understand what you are signing and are signing willingly
● Sign the document and add an official seal
● Record the act in a notary journal, which Delaware asks its notaries to keep as the official record

Why People Get Documents Notarized

Notarization adds a layer of trust to a document. It gives the agency or institution receiving it the assurance that the signature is genuine and the signing was done properly. Many legal and financial matters call for this step, and the party accepting your document will usually tell you when a notary is required.
Common documents that people bring to a notary include:
● Powers of attorney
● Affidavits
● Real estate paperwork
● Loan agreements
● Travel consent forms for minors
● Business contracts and commercial agreements

How to Prepare for Your Visit

A little preparation keeps your appointment quick. Please bring:
● The document you need notarized, filled out except for the parts you will sign
● A valid, current photo ID, such as a state driver’s license, a state-issued ID card, a US passport, or a US military ID
A few things to keep in mind:
● Plan to sign the document in front of the notary, since your signature is witnessed during the appointment
● If our staff member personally knows you, that can serve in place of an ID
● Everyone who is signing should come with their own ID
